Or there's no regular check-in. No weekly or fortnightly meeting where you find out what's been done, what's being worked on next, and where things are stuck.

Both are fixable. Neither requires a difficult conversation. They just require the same intentional structure you'd put around any other important role in your business.

What Good Actually Looks Like

That starts with a priority list. What are the specific things that need to get done? In what order? By when? Written down, dated, and handed over. Not assumed. Not gestured at in a kickoff call and never revisited.

That list gives the fractional something concrete to work toward. It gives you something to track. And it gives both of you something to talk about in the regular check-in.

Because the weekly or fortnightly check-in is not optional. That's where you find out what's been done. What's blocked. What needs a decision from you before the work can move forward. Without it, you're not directing a fractional. You're hoping one.

The Bottom Line

You've engaged someone experienced and capable. That's the easy part. The part that actually determines whether you get value from the relationship is what you do next.

Tell them what you need. Write down the priorities. Put dates on them. Show up to the fortnightly check-in. Discuss what they've done.

It sounds almost too simple. But the number of times a fractional relationship has transformed just from those four things tells me it's worth saying out loud.
