Early in my business, I kept running into the same problem. I'd hire someone capable, experienced, clearly talented and then discover they couldn't be taught anything new.

It showed up as a resistance to feedback. A reluctance to ask questions. A defensiveness when something wasn't working. A quiet certainty that their way was the right way, and that admitting otherwise would cost them something.

I couldn't develop those people. And if I can't develop someone, there's no point having them.

That's when I made no ego, no excuses a non-negotiable value in my business.

What Ego Costs You

When someone on your team can't admit a gap, you lose the ability to close it. When someone won't ask a question, you lose the information that question would have surfaced. When someone can't say I got that wrong, the mistake keeps happening in different forms.

A team of people each protecting their blind spots is a business that can't learn. It can only repeat.

What No Ego Looks Like

It is not about being agreeable or never having a strong view.

It is about being able to say: I don't know how to do this. I made a mistake. I keep getting this wrong and I can't work out why.

In most workplaces, that kind of honesty feels dangerous. Jorge, one of my team, said something today that inspired this blog. He said trust is the prerequisite. That dropping your ego only works if you believe your weaknesses won't be used against you. In most corporate environments, they will be. So people protect themselves. They perform competence instead of building it.

The reason no ego, no excuses works as a value is because I try to model it. I say out loud when I'm procrastinating on something because it's outside my natural style. I say when I've given unclear direction. I say when something I tried didn't work.

When the leader does that, the team sees the value is real. Then they can do it too.

The Hire It Filters Out

I now know early when someone won't fit. It shows up in how they respond to feedback in the first few weeks. Whether they ask questions or pretend they already know. Whether they can say I'm not sure about this or whether every answer is confident regardless of whether it should be.

The capable person who can't be taught will always underperform the less experienced person who can. Because the second person gets better every month. The first one doesn't.

When you're building a team where every person has to grow with the business, unteachable is the most expensive profile you can hire. It just doesn't look that way on the resume.

The Question Worth Asking

Think about the people on your team right now. Who gets better every quarter? Who is the same as they were a year ago?

The ones who get better are almost always the ones who can name what they don't know. The ones who stay flat are almost always the ones who can't.

That gap is not a performance problem. It's an ego problem.

P.S. No ego doesn't mean no confidence. The most confident people I've ever worked with are also the most willing to say when they're wrong. Confidence doesn't need to be protected.
