Your employees aren’t underperforming by choice!

It is very frustrating as a business owner when an employee isn’t performing.

We feel the financial strain of paying wages for work that is subpar, we see the cultural strain of other team members becoming disgruntled picking up the slack and we have to deal with the strain of unhappy customers, one’s that we worked so hard to win.

How packing for my vacation led my 2019 business strategy

I returned from Hawaii last week where I spent 9 nights over the Christmas and New Year break with my family. The plan was beach, pool, exploring, dining and relaxing.

Prior to going I posted a short YouTube clip as part of my daily ‘Sel Unfiltered’ on how I think packing for your vacation should be a lesson on how to plan for the year ahead.

WHAT IS PARAMOUNT TO RETAINING A NEW EMPLOYEE? HERE IS EXACTLY WHAT TO DO.

I am going to blow my own trumpet for a moment.  Well actually, no I’m not, I am just going to show why we practice what we preach. Because it works.

Below is an exert from one of our employees 4-week feedback questionnaire.  She was only asked one simple question.  “How would you describe the first 4 weeks in your role at wattsnextpx?”.  Here is what she wrote:

A little test for your business!

Hello from Sydney, Australia!

After the 34-hour commute (door to door) I am in Sydney for 24 hours before heading to the Gold Coast to see my boys!  Excited?  Yes!  It is a long trip for a short visit but all part of life right now.  This leads me to watts on my mind this week starting with my most said mantra right now!

WHAT DO EMPLOYEES AND EMPLOYERS REALLY WANT?

By: Sue-Ellen Watts

Firstly, you will note that this is not just about what the employees want, which as an employer we are inundated with, but also what the employer needs. I am a big believer that a business’s health reflects the Founders health and if they are not happy no one else is going to be either.  As a result, it is important that there is a focus on what both need to ensure that the entire workplace eco-system is successful.

WHY YOU AREN’T GETTING WHAT YOU WANT IN BUSINESS AND IN LIFE

I receive direct messages daily from my community seemingly asking for help with particular areas of their business and life.

These topics range from engaging staff, firing someone (this is common), moving house, changing jobs, expanding their business, following a big scary dream and many others.

They come from men and women, experienced and just starting out, people I know and people I don’t.

I really love that people are reaching out and consider me someone that could help them. However, in most cases I can’t help them. Why?

SO YOUR COMPANY VALUES LOOK GREAT ON THE WALL? NOW WHAT?

Last week I shared with you what I see as the biggest mistake businesses make when creating company values. You can read it here, but in a nut shell, companies fall into two traps:

  1. Choosing values that are cool, whether it be cool words or copying values of other cool companies

  2. Choosing values (or behaviours) that everyone in the company already lives and breathes, or at least should, like honesty and excellent customer service

THIS IS THE NUMBER ONE WAY TO ENGAGE YOUR STAFF

The most common question I am asked as CEO and Founder of HR Consulting firm wattsnext is ‘how do I increase performance in my business?’  Most business owners I speak to think their staff are great but believe that they could be better.

Usually the first place HR professionals and business owners look to solve this problem is training.  What training can I send them to that will make them better at their job?

THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAINING FOR YOUR STAFF RIGHT NOW!

01 SEP THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAINING FOR YOUR STAFF RIGHT NOW!

It could be my lucky day!

I just learned a lot of very juicy information about a company that as an external person I should definitely NOT know.

I won’t name names on this blog because that would be unprofessional, so let’s just call the company “X”!

What do I know about X?

YOU CAN'T SEE WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE

A typical day for most SME business owners and CEO’s is in the trenches.  We are managing and training people, winning customers, putting out fires, watching the dollars, having meetings, recruiting, networking and having more meetings.  We are busy busy doing what we think is right to get the results we need.  We understand the importance of taking time to work on our business rather than in it and do get to do that sometimes, but probably not as much as we would like or be advised to.
